Whiparm Octopus: Ginseng from the Tideland

One of Mokpo’s signature products is the whiparm octopus. Its name comes from the Korean word for “thin” because its legs are thin. Because it is small, it is often wrapped around a stick and eaten whole or cooked as octopus soup. Generally, octopuses are caught in Korea’s western and southern waters, but the whiparm octopus is a local specialty caught only in places like Mokpo, Yeongam, Muan, and Sinan. Besides being eaten whole and raw, octopus can be cooked into various dishes including octopus soup, spicy octopus salad, octopus bibimbap, and beef rib and octopus soup.
